Adventure engagement photos are becoming more popular, and for good reason. Not only do they look stunning, the photos will be unique to you and your partner, and will give you memories to cherish forever. Having your photos taken in the spring and fall have obvious benefits, changing colors or blooming flowers and, of course, nice weather. Sometimes however, timing doesn’t work out, or certain months are preferred for your desired session, and the only option is to have an outdoor engagement session in the summer. Fret not, we have compiled the ultimate list for staying cool during your summer engagement photoshoot to make sure your photos turn out exactly how you imagined.
Dress for the occasion!
Think short summer dresses, a long & flowy maxi dress or a flirty romper. You probably already have a few things in your closet that will work perfectly, but if you do need to go shopping, be sure to pick light weight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.
If your desired location requires a hike, consider wearing workout gear and changing when you get to your spot. Workout clothes tend to wick moisture and keep you from getting to sticky and sweaty, you can quickly change and feel confident knowing you look great!
Stay Hydrated
Make sure to bring twice as much water as you think you’ll need. If you’ve chosen an adventure engagement session, you’re probably no stranger to how much water is necessary on a particular hike. This time though, you won’t be hiking for exercise. You’ll want to move at a slower pace and keep drinking cold water to make sure you stay cool. You should also consider bringing water or sports drinks with electrolytes to keep your body balanced, and prevent overheating. It is also advised to avoid drinks with caffeine, as those can increase your body temperature-- the opposite of what we are trying to achieve.
Not only is it vital to stay well hydrated, but you can also use cold bottles of water to hold on your neck or against your body to keep yourself from sweating too much between sessions.
Items to bring on an outdoor photoshoot
You’ve packed the right clothes, and enough water. Now, it is time to decide which items to bring that will help you look and feel cool.
Sunscreen, sunscreen, and then more sunscreen.
A battery operated fan. This one from amazon has tons of great reviews.
Oil absorbing wipes to dab at sweaty faces
A towel
An umbrella for shade during any downtime.
Bring your makeup bag in case you need to make any quick fixes.
Plan Ahead
Plan your location well ahead of time, and visit it beforehand at least once so that you know what to expect. It is also important to plan out what you’ll be doing and poses you want with your photographer. Having a solid plan in place will help to minimize downtime, and ensure your session goes smoothly.
Early Morning or Evening Engagement Sessions
Consider having your session early in the morning before the weather gets too hot. Sunrise engagement sessions are gorgeous, and though it may be difficult to wake up early, the effort would absolutely be worth it. You could also have a sunset session, and arrive just before sunset, when it has cooled off significantly. Your photographer will know what time works best, and will be able to guide you accordingly.
